The compact metropolis of eastern Switzerland between Lake Constance and Appenzellerland has a charming, traffic-free old town. Colourfully-painted oriel windows are a town feature. The Abbey precinct with the cathedral and Abbey Library has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage listing.

St. Gallen is modern and cosmopolitan.

The city has a great past. Its name and origins go back to the founding of the monastery by the wandering monk Gallus around the year 612.

You will encounter the past at every turn during a stroll through the enchanting old town: The world-famous bay windows, the cosy alleys, the lively squares with friendly street cafés. The great past created a flourishing present: St.Gallen is modern and cosmopolitan. The imposing baroque cathedral, the heart of the abbey district, watches over the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Gallen is an ideal starting point for excursions to Appenzellerland with the Säntis and to Lake Constance. The Lake Constance cycling and inline skating paradise can be reached quickly by train or bike along the Lake Constance Cycle Path. The combination of bike & boat allows for delightful, cross-border tours. For hikers, the bridge trail over 18 bridges in the Sittertobel near St.Gallen is an experience; you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the construction and design of the bridges.
